RUHTERGLEN: Pensioner punched in attempted robbery by teenage gang

Police are hunting for a gang of cowards, including a spotty ned with ginger hair after a 65-year-old woman was punched in a shocking daylight attack.

But the brave grandmother managed to fight off the three teenage thugs and keep a hold of her bag as they tried to snatch it, despite threats and a sickening assault.

The female victim was attacked by the gang after she had taken a wrong turn down Greenhill Road just before 1pm on Saturday afternoon after returning from a shopping trip to East Kilbride.

As she approached the car park at Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre she was confronted by three youths who tried to snatch her bag then punched her square in the face when she refused to give it up, before running off like the big hard men they obviously are.

All the suspects are white and approximately 16 years of age. Only one youth is further described as having red hair, acne and wearing dark clothing.

Detective Constable Ruth Whyte, Cambuslang CID, said: “The lady had been out for the day shopping and was on the bus heading home when she felt unwell

“Despite them threatening her and hitting her in the face which left her with a black eye, they didn’t get her bag and they ran off up the access ramp towards Greenhill Road.

“Thankfully the lady was not more seriously injured but this was a very frightening experience for her to go through.

“These boys had no respect for her at all and are in my opinion cowards for hitting a woman who was on her own.”
